A Handy List of Facts which are Still True!

  • You do not need an exemption in order to un-enrol a 5yr old from school.

  • You can apply for an exemption any time after the child turns 5, to come into effect when they turn 6.

  • As part of the exemption application process you do not have to meet with Ministry staff or speak with them over the phone if you prefer not to.

  • Only one parent’s details need to be on the application form, and only one parent or guardian needs to sign it.

  • Students can do a school trial of up to 10 weeks and not need a new exemption application (in most circumstances) if they return to home education within that period.

  • 16-19yr olds can enrol in 1 or 2 subjects with Te Kura without losing the exemption and allowance, but their exemption will cease if enrolled in 3 or more subjects.

  • The “one hour a day each of reading, writing and math” policy that the government introduced for schools does NOT apply to home educators – and we don’t have to show this in exemption applications.

  • We are not required to have NZ specific content in any learning area, nor to align with the NZ curriculum.

  • We do need to show that our child will be “taught as regularly and well as in a registered school” – but that does not mean “the same as.”

  • Home educated students have the same right to access free doctors, eyesight and hearing tests and dentists as all other NZ children.
