NCHENZ Website Highlight - Part-Time Employment

There have been a few queries lately about youth working while exempt. so this month’s website highlight is Part-Time Employment

Do you have a student who wants to work while being home educated?
Do you believe a part-time job would significantly contribute to your child’s learning goals?

Home Educated students with an exemption are not effected by the restriction of under 16years olds not being allowed to be employed between the hours of 9-3.
Go to our page Part-Time Employment to learn more.

Members Favourite Resource - Fish Doorbell

Each month we will feature a member's favourite resource. This is a way for members to share with their community, not an endorsement, NCHENZ recommends you do your own due diligence before purchasing any resource, to ensure it meets your needs.

Its Fish Doorbell time again

if you have never taken part in this amazing activity it a great time to give it a go.

The Fish Doorbell is a free website from the Netherlands, they have a city called Utrecht where they have Weedsluis, a manually operated lock. When the lock gates are closed, the Fish are forced to wait, wasting valuable time and energy and making them easy prey for birds and predatory fish.
To help the Fish, an underwater camera is installed at the lock. If fish appear on screen, you can press the doorbell! This alerts the lock keeper who will open the lock to let them through.

This is an incredible resource, the website has a range of information about fish breeds, migration, breeding patterns, canals, waterway locks and the Netherlands. It encourages so many questions and has the ability to cover Science, Geography, History, Language and Technology in such a fun and engaging way. It only runs March to May so give it a go before it closes for the year.

Do you have a favourite resource you would like to share in the next Monthly Notices; Please send it to monthlyupdates@nchenz.org.nz

Facebook updates.
Don’t have a Facebook, don’t see posts, Don’t worry,
the following are updates from our NCHENZ and Navigating Highschool & Beyond Facebook pages.

From Navigating Through Highschool and Beyond

Wise words from Nicky Roys. Too good not to share here!

There’s no kudos to finishing a degree early. There’s no stigma for attending university ‘late’. It’s all about helping your child navigate the childhood years and coming out knowing themselves and having their own ideas—and autonomy.

University is about a lot more than academics. It’s about making thoughtful decisions without parental involvement. It’s challenging to navigate alone in new settings. Being amazing at a subject doesn’t mean that everyone will like you, or that you have the skills to cope with a tertiary setting. Would I want to work with that person? Did that person try lots of new experiences and learn about themselves—or just stick to their old ways? Did they allow themselves to be challenged sufficiently?

In the end, it’s about giving them the space to grow, make choices, and figure things out—while still knowing they have somewhere to come home to.

About NCHENZ

The National Council of Home Educators NZ (NCHENZ) has been an Incorporated Society since 1998, dedicated to supporting and advancing home education across Aotearoa NZ at a national level.

We are the only nationwide homeschooling body in NZ representing all home educators, and we hold a strong commitment to neutrality. As per our Constitution, we do not endorse or promote any particular political, religious, educational, parenting, or socio-economic philosophy or methodology. Our focus is on creating an inclusive environment where all members, regardless of their cultural background or beliefs, feel welcomed and respected.

We have had zero membership fees for many years to ensure that the organisation is accessible to the entire homeschooling community, regardless of personal circumstances.
