GROW, HARVEST, PREPARE, SHARE

The Garden to Table programme is changing the way children approach and think about food. In schools all around the country they are supporting children to enthusiastically get their hands dirty and learn how to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal food. Children learn where food comes from, and how to grow, prepare and cook home-grown produce. They begin to understand the seasonality of food and to make better food choices.

A subscription to Garden to Table is $16.50 per family for one year. The subscription runs from 1st June 2017 to 31st May 2018. Please note that this subscription has a cap on the number of subscribers so please get in quick. The first group reached the cap in less than 24hrs. A second group has been started and enrolments will close once the cap is reached.

Once subscribed, Garden to Table provides all the information you need via their online portal. From there you will be able to access:

  • Participation, garden, kitchen and ‘how-to’ guides
  • A set of child-friendly recipes using produce from your garden
  • Information and safety sheets
  • Kitchen skills instruction videos
  • Participation certificates and licences (eg. the Garden to Table Wheelbarrow Licence)
  • Comprehensive curriculum resources

Three new modules are added into the online portal each term, and most of the modules have downloadable worksheets along with links to additional online resources. How Garden to Table is usually used in a school is that teachers build their own lesson plans based on the available online modules, keeping in mind whatever they are doing in the garden/kitchen and their desired learning outcomes. Home educators may develop a similar sort of lesson plan using the kitchen and garden resources each week to establish gardening and cooking skills, and to draw in discussions about sustainability and the environment; or they may dip in to a range of different modules following the cues from their child and allowing the learning to flow organically :). Feel free to connect online on the NCHENZ Facebook group or NCHENZ Forum to see how others are using this resource.
