GirlGuiding NZ are making Guiding options available to more girls around New Zealand, in more ways than one. Firstly, they have created Explore – a safe, fun, engaging digitally delivered option for girls who are unable to attend weekly meetings, but would still like to do the exciting activities that GirlGuiding NZ members love. Secondly, and best of all, GirlGuiding NZ have decided that, to help even more girls access Guiding experiences amidst these current crazy times, Explore will be free for all 2020!
Explore offers experience-based learning that is made available to girls via a custom-built and secure girl-led portal and all you need is an internet connection to access it. It is accessible on any device, any time, from any place, making it totally flexible. Although it is digitally delivered, girls undertake the activities available in the ‘real’ world. Since COVID-19 made its appearance, the programmes have been re-designed to ensure that all activities can be done in lock-down conditions.
Explore Pippins (5-6 year olds) or Brownies (7-10 year olds). Girls largely work independently to complete activities at their own pace, with support from a dedicated volunteer leader. This programme has been designed with both the girl and parent experience in mind, and a series of filters enables parents to easily navigate activities that girls can do alone or that they can do together, and ones that can be done inside/outside, and for certain lengths of time.
With Explore, girls can grow their confidence and connectedness, their abilities, and their sense of adventure, and can do so without having to travel to meetings! Explore is especially great for girls who may not be able to commit to the same time every week, or who move between houses.
Like all Girlguiding NZ programmes, Explore is girl-led. Girls choose their own adventure from those offered and, because volunteer leaders keep them engaged and encouraged with one-on-one attention, they will begin to learn about the world, and their unique place in it, whilst having fun. Girls are also invited to virtual (and face-to-face, when safe) events within the wider Guiding community.
Activities include experiments in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths); learning to care for the environment and how to be safe outdoors; exploring the community and looking after it; growing and caring for plants; trying new outdoor activities and challenging themselves; learning how to lead a healthy lifestyle and learning about all aspects of diversity, as well as other subjects.
Because the online safety of your daughter is of vital importance to us, our site is secure, with SSL encryption; specifically designed for young girls to use; monitored by GirlGuiding NZ; and free from external links and advertising pop-ups.
Group-based guiding, currently being delivered in a virtual model, will also be free for Term 2.
