Competitive Team Sports

If your homeschooled student wants to play team sports, there are community sports teams in most areas. Your regional homeschool networking group may organise sports teams, or have information to share about local sports. Sometimes a smaller school may let home educated kids join in.

If your student wants to play competitively at high school level, however, there may be problems.

Competitions are organised by local sporting codes, eg Auckland Basketball. Competing teams need to be financial members of these codes, who have running costs to cover such as grounds hire and insurance.

They also have constitutions to cover rules of play. High school based codes often have clauses which require players to have been enrolled at a school for the previous 6 months to be eligible to play. This rule is to prevent “poaching” of talented students by rival teams, and those codes who have this rule do not wish to change it.

Some codes do allow community teams to join as members.

You can search online for the code’s constitution to check the rules. If your student wants to play competitively, you will have to look around for a community team which is a member of the local code and therefore eligible to enter competitions.
